Lawton, Oklahoma – CSM (Retired) Roger Lynn Casinger, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on December 9, 2022, in Lawton, Okla. He was 83 years old.

Roger was born on January 17, 1939, the oldest of three sons and a daughter born to L.D. and Ima Jean (Rogers) Casinger of Clinton, Ark. He graduated from Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957 and enlisted in the U.S. Army; he completed his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.

During his remarkable, 30-year active-duty career he received many awards, recognitions, and commendations for his combat service in Vietnam, his tours of duty in Japan and Germany in support of the U.S. commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and his leadership as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Armored Division Artillery in Zirndorf, Germany.

Though he retired from active duty as a Command Sergeant Major in 1987, he continued his service to his country as a contractor for the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he helped develop and field equipment for his field artillery brothers and sisters. After more than 50 years of service to his country, he officially retired in 2009.

Roger was an animal lover and had cats and dogs all his life. He also enjoyed military history, collecting autographs, painting military figurines, traveling, and watching movies. His autograph collection is rivaled only by his movie collection. Though his family was always scattered across the country, he didn’t let a birthday go by without calling to sing Happy Birthday.

Along the way, Roger suffered his share of heartbreak. He lost his high school sweetheart, and wife of 47 years, Billie Jean (Pearrow) on September 16, 2004, and his son, Mark on March 27, 2009.

He was blessed with a second chance at happiness when he married Marilyn Sue (Pearrow) on August 30, 2005. He and Sue were married for 18 years until his passing.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Sue, his children, Don (Debbie), Julie (Shannon), and Michael (Lisa), his stepdaughters Kim and Traci, his grandchildren Amanda, Kimberly, Zachary, Sean, Christopher, Heidi, Ben, Noah, Christian, Talyia, and Tyler, 13 great-grandchildren, his brother Jimmy, his sister Donna, and many nieces and nephews.

He will be celebrated at Pinecrest Memorial Park Chapel in Alexander, Arkansas, on Monday, December 19, 2022, at noon. Interment with full military honors will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Veteran’s Field of Honor.

“Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history.”—Mary Roach

HUDSON FALLS, NY

— Lloyd H Burch passed away unexpectedly at his home in Hudson Falls on Saturday, August 18, 2018. He was seventy five years old.

Survivors

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Linda (Underwood) Burch, of Hudson Falls; his sons, Gregory of Hudson Falls, and Brandon (Jessica) of Fort Edward; his daughter, Rebecca of Oswego, NY; two brothers, Larry (Janet) and Wayne (Karin) Burch; and sister, Mary Ann Germain. He is also survived by his wife’s family; Louise (John) DeSare, Keith (Marian) Underwood, Karen Phetteplace, Bill (Penny) Underwood, Wayne (Phyllis) Underwood, Daniel (Joanne) Underwood, Diane (Bob) Michelucci, Bette Shaw, Barb (Clemente) Amelio, and Tim Underwood. Lloyd is also survived by former daughter-in-law Heather and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wilfred Burch; and his sister, Jane Mattison.

Lloyd H Burch was born December 4, 1942, in Kingsbury to Herbert and Ethel Burch. He often told the story of how he was such an adorable child that strangers offered to purchase him. He served in the 503rd Army Corps of Engineers and built structures and playing fields for children throughout Germany. In 1967, he returned to the US and started work at Ideal Dairy Farms in Hudson Falls. He was introduced to Linda Underwood (who lived next door) by her brother William and proposed to her on their second date. They wed on January 11, 1969 and they were married for 49 years.

He had other jobs throughout his life but worked at Great Meadow Correctional Facility for 22 years. He retired in 2006. He loved hunting with his brother, Larry, his sons, and his grandchildren. He loved going to camp, reading mysteries (he would laugh until he cried reading Janet Evanovich books), driving around in his VW Thing, and puttering in his tool shed. He was generous and kind, helping his neighbors and friends with everything from mowing lawns to camp repairs to cutting firewood. He loved to tell stories and would joke around for hours.  He loved people. He would talk to anyone about anything, which made shopping and running errands very long and difficult for his family. By far, his greatest joys in his life were his grandchildren Devin, Jessie, and Lucas Burch. He adored them and they were the center of his world. He took great delight in teaching them naughty things.

Calling hours are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 24 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.

A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, Aug. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY 12871

The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and condolences. Lloyd would have been so touched to know how much he was loved.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in memory of Lloyd, please send to Newcomb Sportsman’s Club in care of Walter Huba, 18 Cimarron Way, Latham, NY 12110-1948.

Condolences can be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, or through http://www.bakerfuneralhome.com/obituary/lloyd-burch

My Father did not live to witness the Plattsburgh Air Force Base base closing in 1995.

Plattsburgh Air Force Base

Plattsburgh AFB was located in the extreme northeast corner of the United, only twenty miles from the Canadian Border. Immediately to the East is Lake Champlain. Burlington, Vermont was on the opposite shore. The base closed on September 25, 1995, pursuant to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990 (10 U.S.C. Sec. 2687 note) and the recommendations of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission. It is now an industrial complex, operated by the Plattsburgh Air Base Development Authority.

Plattsburgh was the oldest military post in the United States. The original military reservation was purchased by the Federal Government on Dec.30, 1814 and consisting of only 200 acres. Additional parcels of land were acquired and stone barracks were built to house “Plattsburgh Barracks” personnel in 1838. Many different types of units have valiantly served at Plattsburgh over the years using a great variety of weapons, from muskets and cannons to the sophisticated FB-111As and KC-135s.
