WYNANTSKILL – Jill Suzanne Bryce, 63, was set free February 27, 2025, gently and peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved daughter of Wally and Marlene Bryce of Averill Park; and was married to the love of her life, Thomas Weiss.
Jill met Tom on the Adirondack ski slopes, and they spent their years skiing, sailing and traveling together. Jill enjoyed adventures with the Out of Control Ski Club, and she and Tom were proud members of the Jiminy Peak Ski Patrol. They also assisted skiers at the Double H Ranch, and Jill helped start the Andrew Christian Bryce Foundation, both efforts that helped young people with illnesses enjoy their lives.
Jill was a graduate of The Doane Stuart School and Union College. After earning her bachelor’s degree in English and political science, she began her 20-plus year reporting career for the Troy Record and The Daily Gazette. She won an Associated Press award for beat reporting in 2004. She never put down her pen, writing poems, plays and stories while also working for her family’s Real Estate.
She loved to slam a tennis volley, sail in strong winds with her Tommy Boy, ski narrow glades, win ski races, even conquer the Matterhorn. Jill loved to throw a party and was always the life of the party. Never shy, she danced with an ’80s flair, sang out of tune, golfed, visited friends, chatted on the phone late into the night, and attended church, concerts and plays.
In addition to her parents, and devoted husband, she is survived by sisters, Kyle Bryce Batease (Glenn) of Queensbury, Susan McGuire (Thomas) of Weston, Fla., and Jennifer Leonard (Michael) of Reading, Mass.; and a brother, David Bryce (Astri) of Troy.
Also surviving are stepson, Russell Weiss (Kate) of E. Arbury, New South Wales, Australia; along with the nieces and nephews that brought her so much joy: Heavenly godson, Andrew; Kristjan, Axel, David (Nina), Anna, Thomas, Bryce (Alex), Wallis, Owen; her godson, Ian; Emma and Penelope. Her grandchildren, Millie, Isabelle and Will, will also miss her.
Jill leaves her favorite canine friend, Kayla; along with her signature collection of hats, ski vests and jackets. Her numerous friends that became like family are too numerous to list. She was predeceased by grandparents, Esther and Denton Bryce and Elizabeth and Joseph Wiesenforth.
Faced with the thief called cancer, she helped frontier immunotherapy and always made an effort to bring joy and comfort to others.
Her strong faith, her devoted husband, and her family carried her through precious, extra years. Cancer be not proud; you are not her whole story.
“Leave them with a smile,” she would say, (so go ahead and put the windows down and belt out a song or two for Jill).
We remember the joy and are thankful for it. In Peace I will lie down and Sleep for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Relatives and friends may call at Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 276 Pawling Ave., Troy, on Monday, March 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m., at Brunswick Church, 42 White Church Lane, Troy, with Rev. Jim Knapp officiating.
Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery in Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Jill S. Bryce to The Community Hospice (Gift Processing Center), 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, N.Y. 12208, or the Center for Melanoma Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, Mass. 02215.

Brunswick, NY- Gene H Senecal of Brunswick, passed away peacefully in his new home on the hill surrounded by his family and beloved grand-dogs on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Gene was born in Troy, New York, on December 4, 1942, to the late Eugene and Florence (Richardson) Senecal.  In 1960, Gene graduated from Lansingburgh High School.  He then carried onto Castleton University for his Bachelors Degree in English.  Shortly after graduation, he was hired at Tamarac High School to teach English and film studies, which he enjoyed for the next 31 years.  He became one of the most popular campus personalities and a favorite “adult” role model.  Gene always appreciated the occasions his students would visit the old Hall Road Farm and spend time swapping stories, fishing, hunting, and painting. Gene, also known by most as “Geno, The Pencil Neck Geek or Turtle,” was a family man as well.

He married the late Carolyn E. Senecal (Miller) on Woodstock weekend in 1969.  She was the love of his life for the next 43 years.  They built their dream on a 20-acre farm on Hall Road in Pittstown, where they then were surprised with a beautiful baby girl, Hillary Senecal in 1983.  She became the apple of Dad’s eye for the next 41 years.  During their time at “the farm,” the trio raised Morgan horses, built bass ponds, mowed a lot…. And they truly enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
During the last few years, Gene moved to a bigger “farm” with his daughter and son-in-law, Ryan.  He still enjoyed reading his books and his crosswords and keeping up with his favorite Red Sox.  To his delight, with his brother and dear friends, he was still able to make his weekly trips to his favorite “watering holes,” Man of Kent and Giuseppe’s, where the bartenders would have the beers waiting!

Gene is survived by his daughter and son-in- law, Hillary Senecal and Ryan Fornango, his brother and sister-in-law, Lance and Nora Senecal, nephew, Lance K. Senecal, nephew and wife, Robert and Kimberly Kissinger, and their children, Olivia and Dylan Kissinger.  In addition to his parents and wife, Carolyn, he was predeceased by a nephew, the late Nolan Senecal.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, with a short service to follow at 6:15 p.m.  Burial will take place later this spring at Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick.

The Senecal Family wishes to extend their most heartfelt appreciation to caregivers Leslie Shinkman and Larissa Forette for their exceptional care and compassion over the past year.

In memorium and as a way to honor Gene’s love of his many four-legged friends, please feel free to make any donations to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12203, or enjoy a nice cold Pale Ale with a friend.

NEW YORK  — Richard Parsons, one of corporate America’s most prominent   executives who held top posts at Time Warner and Citigroup, died Thursday. He was 76. Parsons, who died at his Manhattan home, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 and cited “unanticipated complications” from the disease for cutting back on work a few years later. The financial services company Lazard, where Parsons was a longtime board member, confirmed his death. Parsons’ friend Ronald Lauder told The New York Times that the cause of death was cancer.

Parsons stepped down Dec. 3 from the boards of Lazard and Lauder’s company, Estée Lauder, citing health reasons. He had been on Estée Lauder’s board for 25 years.

“Dick was an American original, a colossus bestriding the worlds of business, media, culture, philanthropy, and beyond,” Ronald Lauder said in a statement on behalf of the Lauder family.

David Zaslav, the CEO of Time Warner successor Warner Bros. Discovery, hailed Parsons as a “great mentor and friend” and a “tough and brilliant negotiator, always looking to create something where both sides win.”

Parsons, a Brooklyn native who started college at 16, built a track record of steering big companies through tough times. He returned Citigroup to profitability after turmoil from the global financial crisis and helped restore Time Warner after its much-maligned acquisition by internet provider America Online.

Parsons was named to the board of CBS in September 2018 but resigned a month later because of illness.

Parsons said in a statement at the time that he was already dealing with multiple myeloma when he joined the board, but “unanticipated complications have created additional new challenges.” He said his doctors advised him to cut back on his commitments to ensure recovery.

“Dick’s storied career embodied the finest traditions of American business leadership,” Lazard said in a statement. The company, where Parsons was a board member from 2012 until this month, praised his “unmistakable intelligence and his irresistible warmth.”

“Dick was more than an iconic leader in Lazard’s history — he was a testament to how wisdom, warmth, and unwavering judgment could shape not just companies, but people’s lives,” the company said. “His legacy lives on in the countless leaders he counseled, the institutions he renewed, and the doors he opened for others.” “He was known as a skilled negotiator, a diplomat and a crisis manager.

Although he was with Time Warner through its difficulties with AOL, he earned respect for the company and rebuilt its relations with Wall Street. He streamlined Time Warner’s structure, pared debt and sold Warner Music Group and a book publishing division.

He also fended off a challenge from activist investor Carl Icahn in 2006 to break up the company and helped Time Warner reach settlements with investors and regulators over questionable accounting practices at AOL.

Parsons joined Time Warner as president in 1995 after serving as chairman and chief executive of Dime Bancorp Inc., one of the largest U.S. thrift institutions.

In 2001, after AOL used its fortunes as the leading provider of Internet access in the U.S. to buy Time Warner for $106 billion in stock, Parsons became co-chief operating officer with AOL executive Robert Pittman. In that role, he was in charge of the company’s content businesses, including movie studios and recorded music.

He became CEO in 2002 with the retirement of Gerald Levin, one of the key architects of that merger. Parsons was named Time Warner chairman the following year, replacing AOL founder Steve Case, who had also championed the combination.

The newly formed company’s Internet division quickly became a drag on Time Warner. The promised synergies between traditional and new media never materialized. AOL began seeing a reduction in subscribers in 2002 as Americans replaced dial-up connections with broadband from cable TV and phone companies.

Parsons stepped down as CEO in 2007 and as chairman in 2008. A year later AOL split from Time Warner and began trading as a separate company, following years of struggles to reinvent itself as a business focused on advertising and content. Time Warner is now owned by AT&T Inc.

A board member of Citigroup and its predecessor, Citibank, since 1996, Parsons was named chairman in 2009 at a time of turmoil for the financial institution. Citigroup had suffered five straight quarters of losses and received $45 billion in government aid. Its board had been criticized for allowing the bank to invest so heavily in the risky housing market.

Citigroup returned to profit under Parsons, starting in 2010, and would not have a quarterly loss again until the fourth quarter of 2017. Parsons retired from that job in 2012.

In 2014 he stepped in as interim CEO of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers until Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took over later that year.

“Dick Parsons was a brilliant and transformational leader and a giant of the media industry who led with integrity and never shied away from a challenge,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said.

Parsons, a Republican, previously worked as a lawyer for Nelson Rockefeller, a former Republican governor of New York, and in Gerald Ford’s White House. Those early stints gave him grounding in politics and negotiations. He also was an economic adviser on President Barack Obama’s transition team.

Parsons, whose love of jazz led to co-owning a Harlem jazz club, also served as Chairman of the Apollo Theater and the Jazz Foundation of America. And he held positions on the boards of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Parsons played basketball at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and received his law degree from Albany Law School in 1971. Bennington, VT – Lea Bertani Vozar Newman having bid farewell to friends and family, 98-year-old Lea Newman slipped away peacefully on the night of December 13, 2024, never having to move out of her beloved home. Her final wish was realized.

Wife, mother, teacher, scholar, author, and friend, Lea was an accomplished woman who made her own luck and leveraged her brains and her beauty to succeed at every endeavor she attempted. And she attempted many.

Lea was born in Chicago on August 3, 1926, the only child of Italian immigrants, Marino and Mary Bertani. Her grandmother Nonna Vera devoted herself to little Lea’s care and loved her unconditionally. Lea wrote in her memoir that the security instilled early in her childhood made it possible for her to face life’s challenges in her later years.

Lea graduated as valedictorian from Waller High School (now Lincoln Park HS) in 1943 and won a scholarship to attend Chicago Teachers College. It was there at a USO dance that she met her first husband Cam Vozar, a cadet in the Army Air Corps reserve. They married in 1947 and one year later their first child, a son, named Cam after his father, was born, followed in close succession by two daughters, Donna and Linda. All told, Lea would bear five children, including Mary Michelle, a daughter born in Louisiana in 1957, and Robert Marino, her final son born in Arkansas in 1962.

From early childhood on, Lea was an avid reader and by the time the family moved to Michigan in the early 1960s, she was ready to go back to school. She earned her M.A. at Wayne State University and began teaching English at the local junior college. In 1969, the family made its fifth and final move to Bennington, VT, and Lea enrolled in the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she earned her Ph.D. in English in 1979.

When her husband Cam died in 1971, Lea became the family breadwinner and leveraged her degree to become eventually a full professor at North Adams State College (now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts). She was a gifted teacher and went on to win a Fulbright lectureship in American Literature at the University of Bologna in Italy (1973 -74) and scholar in residence at the University of Urbino in1974.

In 1975, Lea met the man who would become her second husband, Meredith Weldon Newman, a retired Navy pilot known as Chick, who fell in love with her winning smile, wit, and effortless Italian charm. They wed in 1976 and lived in Bennington.

Lea retired from teaching in 1993, and turned her considerable focus to writing. She had already published two academic books about the short stories of Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Wanting to reach a wider audience, Lea penned two books of literary biography: Robert Frost: The People, Places, and Stories behind his New England Poetry (New England Press, 2000) and Emily Dickinson: Virgin Recluse and Rebel (Shires Press, 2013). But her most personal and perhaps most poignant book was a self-published autobiography chronicling her childhood and dedicated to her family: Growing Up Italian in Chicago (Bertani Books 2003).

Lea earned many accolades. She was past-president of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society and the Herman Melville Society. She has the distinction of being the only scholar who has been president of both.

As a founder and vice-president of the Friends of Robert Frost, Lea organized and hosted the “Sunday Afternoons with Robert Frost” series at the Stone House Museum. More recently Lea spoke at two literary teas as fundraisers for Oldcastle Theatre. The first was on the poetry and life of Emily Dickenson, and the following year her subject was Robert Frost. Both were sold out.

Locally, she served as president of the Bennington Branch of the American Association of University Women (1994 -98). She was a popular professor in the Osher Lifelong Learning classes that met at the Bennington Museum, covering not only Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, and Frost, but also Dante. For more than 20 years, Lea participated in an Italian conversation group, drawing on the first language she learned and the Dante course she took to fulfill the foreign language requirement for her doctorate.

She was also a wonderful cook, making the most remarkable Italian dishes from scratch—chicken cacciatore, lasagna, ravioli, etc. Anyone who was lucky enough to taste the rich and delicate flavors at her table learned the phrase, “Si manga bene qui!” One eats well here!

Lea is survived by four of her five children, Camille Alan Vozar, Donna Vozar Olendorf, Linda Vozar Sweet, and Mary Michelle Vozar; her step-daughter Meredith Newman Maroni; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Her youngest child Robert Marino Vozar died in 2022.

A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart Saint Frances de Sales Catholic Church on March 29, 2025.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Robert Frost Stone House Museum: https://www.bennington.edu/robert-frost-stone-house-donation-page
